Souvla – San Francisco

Souvla is a Greek sandwich shop in the heart of San Francisco’s Hayes Valley, inspired by the casual neighborhood souvlaki joints found throughout Greece. (The word “souvla” means “spit” or “skewer” in Greek — the rod on which meat is roasted.)

Greeks have a love affair with souvlaki like Americans do with burgers, and each shop has its own signature style. We think of ours as Greek with a California twist: spit-roasted all-natural meats on warm pita bread with spiced yogurt sauces and fresh herb salads. Souvla’s “Greek fries” are spiked with Mizithra cheese, oregano, olive oil and sea salt.

Souvla proudly serves Greek wine by the quarter- or half-liter in metal carafes, as is traditional throughout Greece. At Souvla, you’ll come to know varietals like moschofilero, agiorgitiko and assyrtiko.

For dessert, we serve frozen Greek yogurt with a variety of our favorite toppings: sour cherry preserves, Baklava crumble with walnuts and honey, or olive oil and sea salt.

Souvla’s offerings are available to eat in or to go to enjoy in Hayes Valley’s neighboring Patricia’s Green.

We look forward to welcoming you to Souvla! Come thirsty and hungry!
